In the Footsteps of the Romans
It is easy to forget that we have in Britain one of the most significant historic large-scale monuments in the whole world. Hadrian's Wall marked the northernmost frontier of the vast Roman Empire that extended to the Middle East and North Africa. It was constructed in 4 years, required amazing feats of engineering and logistics by peoples drawn from across the Empire and held firm for a number of centuries. Our talk shows the wealth of remains still visible today including the Wall itself, turrets, milecastles, forts, bridges and towns and also artefacts from the excellent museums along the trail. We explain the history of the Wall and the detailed level of organisation that made the Roman Empire one of the most powerful states the world has ever seen. In addition we explore the complex history of the Borders up to the present day, the beauty of the remote Northumbrian and Cumbrian countryside and the vibrant city of Newcastle.
