We found the Clan Walk Guide book Walking the Western Isles by Mary Welsh perfect for our walking needs. It provides a range of excellent day and half-day walks on all the main islands linked with informative background details of the area you are walking in.
Scottish Natural Heritage produce a wealth of books and online download materials. We found the booklet on the machair particularly interesting. Guidebooks to places of historic interest such as Arnol are available on site.
We found the Ordnance Survey 1:50000 maps quite adequate for our walking needs ( in combination with the walking guide above ). You will need editions 8, 13, 14, 18, 22 and 31 to cover all of the islands. These and any more detailed maps are available with very speedy delivery from the Map Shop in Upton-upon-Severn.
