Useful Books and Maps
The only British guide book for this walk is
Through the Italian Alps - GTA: The Grande Traversata delle Alpi written by
Gillian Price and published by Cicerone Press. We found it extremely helpful both for giving an overview of
the challenges of the walk and a detailed description of each day's route. Make sure you click on the online
updates section on the website page before you leave to get important changes to the route. Our only slight
regret was that the route, travelling from south to north, did not start from the Mediterranean coast, whereas
German guide books taking walkers from north to south ( why you meet so many German speakers coming the other
way!! ) appear to offer the opportunity to continue to the coast. For German speakers further information can
be found here.
For maps we used the 1:50000 series from the Istituto Geografico Centrale in the order 8, 7, 6, 1, 2 and 3. All of these are available with very speedy delivery from the Map Shop in Upton-upon-Severn. You can also buy them from the Libraria della Montagna near the Porta Nuova station in central Turin.
